US Supreme Court repeals law restricting gun rights in New York

Justice Clarence Thomas said Americans have the right to carry “commonly used” weapons for defense under the Second Amendment to the Constitution.

The US Supreme Court has overturned a court ruling restricting gun rights in New York.

New York state law had required people wanting to obtain a gun license to prove that they had an “appropriate reason” for carrying a concealed firearm and that they were at a “special or unique” risk.

The Supreme Court struck down the law, voting 6-3, saying it violated the constitutional right to bear arms.

The court currently consists of six conservative justices and three liberal justices.

The ruling could affect other states that have strict rules about concealed carry licenses.

Justice Clarence Thomas said Americans have the right to carry “commonly used” weapons for defense under the Second Amendment to the Constitution.

America’s powerful gun lobby, the NRA, on Thursday welcomed the ruling.

“NRA wins SCOTUS case!” The National Rifle Association tweeted, using the acronym for US Supreme Court.
