Satellite captures destruction of Snake Island after Russian withdrawal

Satellite images released by Maxar Technologies on Thursday, June 30, show damage to parts of Snake Island, a Ukrainian island in the Black Sea, after Russian forces withdrew from the area. On Thursday morning, the Ukrainian armed forces published a picture showing plumes of smoke visible on the island, also known as Zmini Island, saying that it had launched an attack on Russian forces the night before. Images from Maxar Technologies show smoke rising from several locations across the northern part of the island. Macsar said Image 2, included as an infrared color view, highlights recently burned areas in black/gray, while unburned plants appear in shades of red/pink. Russian state media said on Thursday that the withdrawal was a “goodwill gesture”. But military analysts in Kyiv said the Russian presence on the island has become unacceptable due to Ukrainian attacks on Russian supply lines, according to news reports.
