There was nothing in the first set, but Kyrgios did nothing to himself due to a double fault in the tiebreak to give Tiafoe the upper hand.

The match went up in the second set, culminating in an epic tiebreak that Kyrgios won 14-12, somehow managing to save five match points.

Kyrgios and Tiafoe fired several aces and countless long rallies in an exchange that left tennis fans in awe.

The Washington Post’s Ella Brockway tweeted: “The Kyrgios vs Tiafoe match is so insane.

“There are few things in sport like the Nick Kyrgios experience.”

Both players complained to the chair referee on multiple occasions, unhappy with spectators in the crowd screaming during the points and as they prepared to serve.

Kyrgios fired 35 aces in total and escaped with the third set, wrapping up the match at 1 a.m. local time in Washington, D.C.

He will face Sweden’s Mikael Ymir in the semi-finals as he continues his quest for a second title in Washington.

On the women’s side, Australian Daria Savile continued her strong performance with a 6-1 7-5 victory over Rebecca Marino to book her place in the semi-final against sixth seed Kaia Kanepi.
